Did you know that 25% to 40% of all Americans have foot problems that are caused mainly by improperly fitted footwear?

The principal outcome of wearing the wrong shoe size are corns and calluses.

For some people, however, hereditary bone structure and walking patterns play an important role.

Corns

  • "Hard" corns usually form on the top or sides of toes. Starting as red skin with a coating of callus, hard corns then develop a cone-shaped root. When the tip of the root penetrates the nerves of the tissue within, you will probably feel a sharp pain.
  • "Soft" corns usually form between the toes. Generally white and damp in appearance, soft corns also develop a core that causes pain.

Calluses

  • A callus, which is nature's way of protecting tissues below from the abrasive pressures above, is a hard layer of dead skin that usually appears on the bottom of the foot.
  • Calluses grow with continued irritation and pressure, and can become sore and painful. A thickened area forms in the middle, indicating the greatest pressure point.

For mild cases, over-the-counter treatments may be an effective cure for calluses and corns. If symptoms persist, your physician may shave away thickend skin. In some cases, a custom orthoses may be prescribed in order to re-dristribute wieght and relieve pressure.

Things to remember:

  • Always have both feet measured when buying shoes.
  • Select comfortable shoes that are long enough and wide enough so cramping and pinching do not occur.
  • Avoid pointy shoes and high heels.
  • Look for shoes and insoles with cushioning features.
  • Wear CoolMax socks to control foot moisture while cushioning feet.
  • Soak calluses and corns.
  • Keep feet moisturized
