Gout is an internal inflammatory condition that can affect any joint in the body. In the foot, the joint at the base of the big toe is the most common area. Symptoms include swelling, sudden jabs of pain, redness, and sensitivity to touch. Discoloration of the joint (red or purple shiny skin) is also common.

What causes this painful condition?
A person's digestive system either makes too much uric acid, or the body cannot excrete it properly. This build-up of uric acid settles in the joint and forms very sharp, needle like crystals that attack the soft tissue.

How is this condition treated?
Consult your doctor when symptoms appear. Gout must be diagnosed by a physician because it is difficult to distinguish this condition from infection, acute rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis.

Regarding foot care, our staff pedorthists can properly fit feet in shoes that relieve pressure on the joint and bunion area. They can also dispense, with a prescription, carbon fiber plates inserted in the footwear and/or custom orthoses. The carbon fiber plate reduces the flexibility of the joint and allows the inflamed tissue to heal more readily. Custom orthoses may be prescribed by the attending physician to relieve excessive pressures and improve the biomechanical function of the foot.

Shoe Recommendations:

Always remember that a shoe with a wider forefoot also provides extra room, not cramping or squeezing the problem areas. In addition, look for the following two features: SL-2 last and Metatarsal padding.
