Shoes for Morton's Neuroma

Morton’s Neuroma, also known as interdigital neuroma, is a thickening of the nerve fiber that runs in between the toes, usually in the webbing between the 3rd and 4th toes. Symptoms often include a burning pain that radiates between these toes. Pain can also be localized in the ball of foot and then shoot into the toes. Others describe a feeling of a pebble or marble in the forefoot of their shoes, or a feeling that their socks are bunched up under their toes.

Overuse and repetitive motions like running create friction and pressure on the digital nerves, causing interdigital nerves to scar and become thicker. The result is numbness, tingling, burning, or a sharp pain. Pain or burning can also shoot backwards up the foot and into the leg. Removing footwear, taking weight off your feet, and massaging your feet often bring instant relief.

what to do about mortons neuroma
  1. Select extra-depth shoes with a roomy toe area. Our most popular Morton’s Neuroma shoes are the 927, 1540, and 587. Important features include soles that are soft and flexible, yet durable. Shoe uppers are constructed of soft, flexible materials including supple leathers, mesh, and high quality man-made materials. These extra-depth shoes, designed with roomier toe areas, are highly supportive for this interdigital neuroma problem, plus they are roomy enough to accommodate any necessary modifications.

  2. Shoe shape is important. Select a shoe shape that matches your foot shape. A shoe with a wider forefoot provides extra room, not cramping or squeezing the toes. Avoid shoes with narrow tapered toes and high heels that force weight onto cramped toes.

  3. Over-the counter insoles for Morton's Neuroma can offer relief. Insoles like the Supportive Cushioning Insole include a soft metatarsal pad that gently lifts the palm of the foot to encourage the splaying out of the toes and metatarsal heads for healthy alignment.

  4. Custom orthoses are recommended when over-the-counter solutions don’t provide the necessary relief. Our ABC certified pedorthists, available at our St. Louis, Branson, and Washington store locations, can fill your physician’s prescription for custom orthoses.
